How to become a private pilot?

Ready to soar and earn your wings? Our flight training program takes a comprehensive and dynamic approach to pilot training, ensuring that you’re prepared for your future in aviation. You’ll tackle both theoretical and practical components simultaneously, diving headfirst into your aviation adventure from day one.

In the theoretical training part, you’ll receive 100 hours of instruction in our club house at Luxembourg-Airport. Our instructors will cover the following topics:

• Air law
• Principles of flight
• Flight performance and planning
• Operational procedures
• Human performance

• Communications
• Meteorology
• Navigation
• Aircraft General Knowledge

At the end of this section, you’ll have to pass a multiple-choice test to assess your theoretical knowledge and understanding.

But that’s not all! While you’re still hitting the books, you’ll already be taking to the skies. (FYI: you can already take practical lessons before even having started with the theoretical part! See FAQ at the bottom) Our experienced flight instructors will work with you to develop the skills and knowledge you need to fly safely and confidently, all while training on our Piper PA28 fleet. You’ll log at least 45 flying hours, including 30 hours with an instructor, 10 hours of solo flying, and 5 hours of cross-country flight.

After completing both the theoretical and practical exams, you’ll receive a private pilot license PPL (A) and a Single Engine Piston SEP (Land) class rating. This rating allows you to fly single-engine land aircraft with piston engines during the daytime under visual flight rules (VFR). Moreover, as a proud PPL holder, you’ll have the chance to level up your skills by pursuing a night rating, instrument rating, or various other professional licenses to elevate your flying privileges.

So what are you waiting for? Join our club and start your journey towards becoming a licensed pilot today! The minimum age to start training is 16 years (17 for the issue of the license), and you’ll need a valid class 2 medical certificate. The total cost of the training is estimated at 13,000 EUR, which can be paid off gradually as you complete your flying hours. Our theory lessons take place between October and April on Mondays and Thursdays from 7 to 9:30 pm.

The minimum age to start your PPL is 15 at which age you can already start with your theoretical classes. The first solo can be done at the age of 16.

However, the day of the practical exam, you need to be at least 17 years old to receive your final PPL.

To start your journey towards obtaining a private pilot license, you need to be at least 16 years old, become a member of Aviasport II and hold a valid Class 2 aviation medical certificate. No previous flying experience is necessary, we welcome all aviation enthusiasts.

Yes, you definitely can, and we even recommend you to do it. As soon as you are a member of Aviasport II and have obtained all the relevant documents, you can start your flight lessons anytime. This will help you to understand some of the complex materials that are taught to you during the theoretical classes. The only requirement is that you need to complete your theoretical exam, before completing your practical exam.

Theoretical classes normally take place from October until April, on Mondays and Thursdays from 7pm to 9.30pm in our Club at the Luxembourg Airport.

Don’t worry, we totally understand that you may have other private things to do. According to the rules, you must attend at least 80% of the classes.

The official language used for the theoretical classes and the practical hours is English.

In that case, we suggest you to do an Introduction Flight with one of our instructors. This will let you take a seat on the pilot seat, control the airplane yourself under the watchful eyes of the instructor, and understand what it needs to become a private pilot.

If this might interest you, just fill out the form on the “Book your flight – Introduction Flight” page and an instructor will get in touch with you asap.

The final PPL theory certificate is valid for 2 years from the (first) date of complete or partial pass of the theoretical exams. It means you need to complete the practical flight training within those 2 years (or alternatively resit the Authority’s exams again — no need to redo the whole course).

Glasses can be worn and do not prevent a prospective pilot from flying, although you need to produce an extra pair of glasses.

The time it takes to obtain a private pilot license can vary depending on individual dedication and frequency of lessons. Typically, it can take anywhere between 10 to 18 months. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination!

Having a private pilot license allows you to fly single-engine airplanes for pleasure and personal business. You may carry your family and friends on flights worldwide. Later you may wish to add further qualifications to your licence, i.e. a Night RatingMulti-Engine or an Instrument Rating. This allows you to fly in cloud and airspace normally reserved for commercial aircraft. The PPL is also a jump off for your professional career if you intend to do your ATPL and become a pilot.

Please note that Aviasport II does not offer all of these ratings. Get in touch with one of our Team to get more specific information.

Yes of course! Our planes are used by our students as well as by our members that have already obtained their licence. You can use the planes for a flight with your friends and families around Luxembourg for a couple of hours, a full day, a weekend trip, or even a long vacation of a couple of days. This is totally up to you and dependant on the availabilities of the planes.

Each member will have a full calendar view of when and what plane is available and bookings can be made up to 3 months in advance.

No, you don’t need any prior flying experience to get started at AviaSport. Our instructors are experienced in working with beginners and will guide you through every step of the way.

The cost can vary depending on factors such as the number of flight hours, ground school hours, and the specific type of aircraft used for training. The typical amount that people spend for a PPL is around 13000-15000 Euros.

No, you don’t! Right after paying the admission and annual fee and after becoming a member of the club, you will receive a personal account that always needs to show a positive balance. So it is your choice how much you want to transfer to your own account. When taking your first practical lessons, you only pay the flight hours that you have flown.

Our students normally train on our P28A, namely LX-AVA, LX-AVO and D-ELLN.

However, students can also opt for our beautiful LX-AVD (Diamond DA-40).

Yes, you can depending on availabilities and language requirements.
